Ten Tips to Improve Posture

Do you notice how other people "stand"? Are you ever complimented on your posture? It's important that you stand up straight; here are simple exercises you can start today!

Proper Use of Mobile Phones

When texting, emailing, or other “surfing”, make sure to keep your head from looking in the down position. This is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to poor head posture.

Desk Ergonomics

When using a desktop computer, make sure the screen is at eye level and that your legs and arms are 90 degrees to the floor.

Head Exercises

An easy exercise involves bringing your head back by tucking your chin in and keeping your eyes leveled. (It looks as if you are making a double chin)

 

Take Side Pictures of Yourself

This is a great way to monitor changes made to improve your posture. Awareness is key!

Exercise Bands

Purchase an exercise band and hold your hands in front of your chest and pull your arms apart while holding onto the exercise band. This will help strengthen a muscle group called the rhomboids, which are important to keep your head in its normal position.

Exercise Ball

One of the best things to do for improving posture is to lie on an exercise ball and arch your back. This helps to combat the forces of gravity we experience everyday.

Door Jam

The door jam is an exercise that helps your rhomboids as well. Place your arms on either side of a doorpost and bring your body forward while bracing between the doorposts. Picture yourself completing a standing push up between doorposts.

Proper Sleep Positioning

The best for optimal sleep is on your back with a cervical curve pillow, which allows a relaxing position for your spine. It may be uncomfortable at first, but your body will thank you in the long run.

Deep Breathing

Several times throughout the day, make sure to take deep breaths which allow us to be aware of our posture and helps to soothe and calm our body systems.
